Our Mission
Mountain Strong: Yancey and Mitchell County Relief is dedicated to rebuilding communities and restoring hope by providing support for families and businesses most impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Our support and relief efforts will evolve as needs change over time, but we will remain dedicated to stabilizing and strengthening our communities by uniting volunteers and donors to address the most pressing needs. Together, we will rise stronger and more resilient than before.

About Mountain Strong
Mountain Strong: Yancey & Mitchell Relief Team was founded by seven women with deep, generational roots in Western North Carolina. All born and raised in Yancey and Mitchell Counties, they’ve known each other since childhood.
In the days following Hurricane Helene, their longtime group text quickly shifted from casual check-ins to urgent coordination. As they navigated the crisis alongside their families, a shared sense of responsibility emerged to help these tiny mountain hometowns that raised them. What started as a conversation became a movement, and Mountain Strong was born.
Today, Mountain Strong is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting long-term recovery and community resilience in Yancey and Mitchell Counties. Since its launch, the organization has raised over $500,000 to support those who need it most.
Current initiatives include:
Repairing damaged driveways and critical access points to restore safe, reliable transportation for families
Reopening a former field hospital as a free community clinic with an emphasis on mental health and preventative care
Strategic plans to further address mental health and other needs in Yancey and Mitchell Counties

The seven of us grew up together in Western North Carolina. Most of us have known each other since our earliest school days. Now in our 30’s, we’ve remained close - through college, weddings, babies and more. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, we immediately turned to a years-long text thread for information and support, checking in on each other and our families. An overwhelming need to help our tiny hometown banded us together and highlighted a need for each of our skills, the culmination of which became Mountain Strong. We are so thankful to be able to contribute relief and support to Yancey and Mitchell County. We couldn’t do it without your support and thank you for helping rebuild these communities that raised us, and that we love so much.
